Hong Kong’s status as a Semi Autonomous Region of China empowers the younger generation to express what makes them unhappy but it doesn’t grant them the political capacity to enact change. Amid the uncertainty of the future of Hong Kong’s political freedom and persistent economic challenges, this younger generation has come to view themselves as Hong Kongers—an identity both threatened and reinforced by the rapid expansion of Beijing’s influence.
